Mercer Falls to UNCG on the Road, 2-1
10/15/2016 9:08:00 PM | Men's Soccer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's Damieon Thomas scored an eventual game-winning goal in the 73rd minute and added an assist earlier in the match to help defeat the Mercer men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 15 at UNCG Soccer Field.
The Bears (9-5-0, 4-2-0 SoCon) held Thomas – the Southern Conference points leader – without an assist or goal in the teams' first matchup earlier this month, but the defensive performance couldn't be duplicated. UNCG improved to 8-4-2 (4-2-0) to tie the Bears in the SoCon standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG's Alexander Lewis was the first to find the net as he flicked his first goal of the season past Mercer goalkeeper Jeremy Booth in the 14th minute. Both Thomas and Hugo Coicaud assisted on the score. However, the Bears connected on the equalizer a little over two minutes later as Emmet Johnson struck his second goal of the year from 10 yards out. Jake Mezei had two shots on goal later in the first half, but the Bears couldn't pull away from UNCG before heading into halftime tied 1-1.
UNCG goalkeeper Logan Rohde kept Mercer at bay in the second half despite the Bears firing off five shots. Rohde recorded three saves in the second half and five overall, providing enough for the Spartans to eventually seal the win behind Thomas' goal.
Mercer had eight corner kick opportunities in the match including two in the 87th minute but couldn't capitalize on the chances.
NOTABLES
Mercer is back on the road early next week to face Wofford (8-5-0, 3-3-0 SoCon) in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The match is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The Bears earned their first SoCon win of the season on Sept. 27 with a 2-0 victory against the Terriers at Bear Field.
