DICKSON, Tenn. – Mercer fell just short of its first team title of the season after a thrilling final round placed the Bears second at the F&M Bank Intercollegiate hosted by Austin Peay.
When the Bears made the turn Tuesday, they pulled just one stroke ahead of Missouri State. But a challenging final nine holes – including a rough Hole No. 18 that saw Mercer card two bogeys and two double bogeys – ended with Mercer placing second overall, just five strokes behind Missouri State.
The Bears did notch two top-five finishes as freshman Kiko Rosete – playing as an individual – tied for second while senior Justin Connelly tied for fifth. Brennan Bogdanovich, finishing tied for 17th overall, carded a team-best round of 1-under-par 71 Tuesday.
MERCER SCORECARD
MERCER ON THE TEAM LEADERBOARD
Mercer finished the day in second place overall, just five strokes behind Missouri State. The Orange and Black edged UT Martin by two strokes.
MERCER ON THE INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
Freshman Kiko Rosete, competing as an individual, tied for second with two other golfers at even-par 216 for the tournament. Senior Justin Connelly was the top Bear on the course whose score counted as he tied for fifth at 2-over-par 218. All four top golfers for Mercer finished in the top 20.
COACH KAYDEN'S COMMENTS
On Tuesday's finish:
"Obviously it was a tough finish for us and it came down to the 18th hole today. That hole was very important for us and Missouri State. They converted and we did not. We just did not execute the shots down the stretch. They were even-par on their four counting scores on the final hole and we were unfortunately five-over-par."
"It was a tough finish for us. The positive is we put ourselves in a very good position with about three holes left but we just couldn't quite close the door on them. This golf course has a difficult finish and you have to make some pars down the stretch and we were unable to do that on the last few holes."
On Brennan Bogdanovich:
"Brennan lead us today with a 1-under-par 71 and he did that with a 20 mile per hour wind. I think that is a very good score under the conditions and being in the final pairing."
On Kiko Rostee:
"Kiko, being a freshman, finishing second was a very good achievement for him as an individual."
NEXT TOURNAMENT
Mercer returns to action on Oct. 24-25 when the Bears compete at the Pinetree Intercollegiate hostsed by Kennesaw State at Pinetree Country Club.
