Series History
The series between Mercer and East Tennessee State is a battle of two new programs and schools new to the Southern Conference. Both schools have reinstated football in recent years and joined the SoCon. For Mercer, it is the school's first entrance into the league. For ETSU, they return to the conference that was their home before leaving after dropping football.
Meeting of New Members
When Mercer and East Tennessee State meet at Five Star Stadium on Nov. 5, it will be a meeting of the Southern Conference's two newest members. Mercer joined the conference in 2014 in all sports while East Tennessee State (formerly a member from 1978 to 2005) rejoined the league in all sports except football in 2014 while its newly resurrected football program is currently in its first year in Southern Conference play.
Welcome Home
For Mercer, Saturday's game against East Tennessee State marks the school's fourth Homecoming game and the Bears are looking for a more favorable outcome than the last two seasons. After winning its first Homecoming game in 2013 (41-14 over Stetson), the Bears have fallen short in close contests since joining the Southern Conference.

Welcome Home, Part II
Saturday's game is not just a Homecoming game for the Bears but also a very welcome home back to Macon and Five Star Stadium. Mercer has been on the road in four of the past five weeks (tallying a 2-2 record in those road games, 3-2 over the five weeks in all).
Mercer will now finish the season with two home games (Nov. 5 vs. ETSU, Nov. 19 vs. Furman) sandwiched around a road date at Samford (Nov. 12).
Marquise Irvin re-Writing the Record Book
Have a day, young man. Marquise Irvin did just that on Oct. 29 at Wofford as the sophomore set or tied three school receiving records. Irvin's 12 catches is a new standard breaking the old record of 9 by Avery Ward (at VMI, 10/1/2016) while he also broke his own school record of 139 receiving yards, tallying 143 on his 12 catches. Finally his two touchdown receptions ties a school record and is the eighth time a player has caught two touchdown passes in a game.
Irvin is now first or second in all of the receiving categories in the Mercer record book.
