Mercer Falls at Clemson, 90-47
12/10/2016 6:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
CLEMSON, S.C. – Ria'n Holland led Mercer with 12 points but the Bears were unable to contain hot-handed Clemson in a 90-47 loss in front of 7,514 at Littlejohn Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Donte Grantham had 19 points off four 3-pointers in the win for Clemson. The Tigers (6-2), tagged with a basketball rep of pre-ACC season struggling, won their second consecutive game in dominating fashion after topping Coppin State by 41 points here last Sunday. This time, Clemson rode Grantham's strong outside shooting to a 27-point first-half lead that the Bears (5-5) could not dent.
All 12 points from Holland came off 3-pointers, as did almost half (8) of Mercer's total field goals (17).
Grantham had two long-range baskets and a 3-point play early on to put the Tigers up 18-11. He added a long 3 right before halftime as Clemson went into the break ahead 49-23. Jaron Blossomgame had 16 points as the Tigers had five players finish in double figures. Grantham also added six rebounds, two assists and block and a steal.
Mercer, which has lost four of its last five, takes a week off for final exams before playing at Auburn (6-1) on Sunday, Dec. 18.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Hard to argue against Ria'n Holland for this spot as he was responsible for over a quarter (12) of Mercer's points (47) in the game. All 12 points came off four 3-pointers while he grabbed a rebound and was credited with an assist in 27 minutes played.
STAT OF THE GAME
Almost half of Mercer's points in Saturday's game came from downtown. The Bears were 17-for-56 from the field overall but that includes an 8-for-29 mark from beyond the arc.
