Mercer Falls to No. 7 Florida State
12/21/2016 10:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Kahlia Lawrence led Mercer with 16 points in her eighth double-digit game of the season as the Mercer women's basketball team took on No. 7 Florida State. The Seminoles proved to be too much for the Bears, leaving Macon with an 83-40 victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Florida State took control right away, hitting the first three shots of the game and surging to an 18-4 lead in the first seven minutes. As the first half progressed, the Seminoles continued to outscore the Bears and eventually worked their way to a 53-17 lead at halftime.
Â
Lawrence opened the second half with a three-pointer for Mercer, but Florida State countered with a 13-0 run to work its way to a 66-20 lead. The Bears outscored the Seminoles 7-2 in the final 3:45 of the third quarter to bring the score to 68-27 with 10 minutes left play. The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter as neither really gained control of the period. Mercer played hard for 40 minutes, but Florida State's first half lead was too much for the Bears to overcome.
Â
NOTABLES
General thoughts on the game:
"Well, we know that Florida State is a very, very good basketball team and I've said over and over that I would not be surprised if this team makes it to the Final Four. Unfortunately they jumped on us early and we simply could not hit shots. They shot incredibly well in the first half at over 60 percent and we shot 25 percent. I knew we'd have to play a near-perfect game, which we did not, and they played exceptionally well. I'm disappointed in the outcome but I'm also pleased with the fight that we continued to display."
