THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer led from the start, matching its best three-round total (894) of the season to claim its first team title since October 2013. The Bears outpaced three Golfstat.com Top-100 programs at the event, using a 12-over 300 on the final day of action to stay in front of second-place Toledo.
COACH DRINKARD'S TAKE
"I couldn't write a script better than this weekend to kick off our spring season. I'm so proud of the team. The team's mindset since the first day of spring classes was to play to win. They believe in each other and hold each other accountable to improving every day. It is a fun team to coach and we are just getting started. This team is creating the record book for Mercer Women's Golf and this is only the first of many entries."
"So many fun things happened in this tournament. My favorite was watching Payton break the tournament record in route to getting her first collegiate win. She played with such confidence and composure and hit the ball so well from tee to green. Jaelyn and Marin also got their first Top 3 finish as well so we dominated the scoreboard in every way."
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Schanen became Mercer's second medalist of the 2015-16 season, as the freshman was under par for the third-straight round with an 1-under 71. The Alpharetta, Ga., native finished with a tournament record 4-under 212, posting an eight-stroke advantage over her closest opponent.
MERCER NOTABLES
- The Bears led all teams on Par-3 and Par-5 opportunities, finishing an impressive six strokes ahead of all competitors on Par-5 holes and one shot ahead of the field on Par-3 holes.
- Hanna and Tindal tied for third place overall, marking the first time since the Eat A Peach Classic during the 2013-14 season that the Bears have had three individuals finish among the Top-3.
- Tindal closed the tournament with a 6-over 78 to give her a new record three-round performance with an 8-over 224.
- Hanna, who competed as an individual, also had a career outing with the 8-over 224, as the junior finished the weekend with a 4-over 76 on the final 18 holes of golf.
- Schanen did most of her damage on Par-4 holes, as she topped the rest of the field by a whopping eight strokes to finish 3-under on those opportunities. She also led the field 13 birdies.
- Janiga finished with her fourth Top-20 performance of the year, after climbing nine spots on the leaderboard with a 2-over 74 on the final day.
The Bears will be back in action on Feb. 28-29, as they travel to Charleston, S.C. to compete in the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic at the Kiawah Island Osprey and Oak Point Golf Club.
