MOBILE, Ala. – The Mercer University men's tennis team fell to No. 71 South Alabama, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon in Mobile, Ala.
"Once again we won the doubles point and just couldn't quite get it done," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "We had two matches still on court in position to win but South Alabama was just tougher at certain times. I can assure you this schedule is toughening us up for conference play. It will pay off."
Mercer won the doubles point with wins at flights one and two, Arnav Mohanty and Arsav Mohanty clinching the doubles point with their 7-5 win on court one.
South Alabama's Juan Troglia and Tuki Jacobs picked up wins on courts three and two, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Nicolas Guillon played to three sets on court one, ultimately falling to Tim Srkala (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) as South Alabama took a 3-1 advantage.
Zacharie El Ayat played a tight match on court six while Arnav Mohanty and Fernando Guardia each forced a third set in their matches. With the momentum wavering in the match, El Ayat dropped his match at flight six and South Alabama pulled out the win.
Next up, Mercer will face its fourth nationally ranked team of the season, as the Bears will take on No. 44 Georgia Tech on Sunday, February 14 at 5:30 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
