
Women's Golf Finishes Fourth at 2016 SoCon Championship

POOLER, Ga. – The Mercer University women's golf team tied a season-best with a team score of 287 in the second round of the Southern Conference Championship to help the Bears finish fourth in the 23rd edition of the event at the Savannah Quarters Golf Club.

THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer matched a season-best with a 1-under 287 in the second round, the fourth best round in tournament history, before carding a 14-over 302 in the final round of play. The Bears moved past Samford and Wofford and into fourth place. No. 22 Furman won the event, while Chattanooga and East Tennessee State rounded out the top three.
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Janiga led the charge up the leaderboard for Mercer, using a 2-under 70, the second best round by any individual in the tournament, to climb 16 spots on the leaderboard in the final day of play. The freshman finished 10th overall with a total tally of 225 for the program's best individual finish at the SoCon Championship. It was also the top effort at a conference championship since Lacey Fears and Mary Alice Murphy tied for fifth at the 2014 Atlantic Sun Championship.
MERCER NOTABLES
- Head coach Michele Drinkard and the Bears' young lineup put together a big turnaround in 2016, finishing four spots higher in the team standings than their performance a year ago.
- Mercer had four individuals place inside the Top-20 for the first time since accomplishing the feat at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship en route to a third-place finish.
- After carding just four birdies in the opening round of play, Mercer exploded for 26 over the final 36 holes to rank third among all SoCon schools with a total of 30. Janiga led the way with eight, seven coming today, while Schanen and Hanna had seven and six respectively.
- Janiga tied for third in the tournament with 37 holes with a score of par. Deems wasn't far behind with 33.
- Janiga notched her team-leading seventh Top-20 performance and the fourth Top-10 effort, while Schanen pushed her total number of Top-20 finishes to six. Hanna had her second of the year and Deems closed out the tournament with her first Top-20 outing of 2015-16.
