
Women's Lacrosse Steams Past Howard, 19-6

Washington, DC – The Mercer University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-6 victory over Howard on Sunday afternoon. Lindsey Zeltwanger led Mercer with a career-high seven goals and 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears surged to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game, as four different Mercer players scored goals. Howard scored its first goal of the game with 22:07 remaining in the first half, but the Bears added another four goals to stretch their lead to 9-2 with 16:52 to play in the period. Another Bison goal interrupted Mercer's scoring, but the Bears recovered and netted another four unanswered goals to take a 13-2 lead with 3:38 left in the first half. Each team added a goal in the final minutes of the period as Mercer entered halftime with a 14-3 advantage.
With the running clock enacted for the entirety of the second half, Mercer's offensive output slowed a little. The Bears scored the first goal of the second half, but Howard answered its only two back-to-back goals of the day to cut Mercer's lead to 15-5 with 19:20 on the clock. Mercer outscored Howard 4-1 in the last 15 minutes of play to take a 19-6 lead as time expired.
NOTABLES
- Lindsey Zeltwanger led Mercer with a career-high 10 points off a career-high seven goals and a season-high-tying three assists. Zeltwanger also grabbed a career-high seven draw controls and had three ground balls and a caused turnover.
- Kate Christian scored two goals and dished out a career-high four assists to tally a season-high six points. She also notched a draw control and a caused turnover.
- Erica Coyne registered three goals, a season-high-tying two assists and a season-high-tying five points. She also recorded a ground ball and a draw control.
- Kelly Hagerty scored a career-high three goals and had a ground ball and a draw control.
- Haleigh Brooks tallied two goals, three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
- Gabby Goldberg had a goal and a ground ball, while Meghan Segreti notched a goal and three draw controls.
- Kendall Garrett registered her first career assist and had career highs of four ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.
- Tori Blakeman recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover, while Audrey Allen grabbed three ground balls.
- Anna Schneeberger notched two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control and Katie Brueske picked up a ground ball.
- Taylor Horner grabbed a draw control and Victoria Ferdinandi had a caused turnover.
- Haleigh Wurzel played the first half in goal for Mercer and made five saves, while Michele Holmes played the second half and made three saves.
- Mercer outshot Howard, 33-18, and won the draw control, 18-8.
- The Bears picked up 22 ground balls, while the Bison managed 21.
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer moves to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in Atlantic Sun play, while Howard is now 0-11 on the season and 0-5 in league games.
