Bears Fall To Samford, 2-0
9/30/2016 11:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mercer women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 match to Samford in Birmingham on Friday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Samford went up 1-0 in the 19th minute after Jermaine Seoposenwe broke away and chipped the ball in from 15 yards out. The Bulldogs defense kept Mercer from getting a good look at goal in the first half and Samford carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Â
Mercer's offense looked more alive in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, Samford was able to add a goal in the 59th minute to take a 2-0 lead, one which the Bulldogs held onto for the remainder of the match.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Samford's offense had a handle on the ball, as the Bulldogs led the Bears in shots, 18-4.
Â
NOTABLES
- Cristina Mursuli played 90 minutes in goal for the Bears, making five saves on the night.
- Four Mercer players tallied a shot, three of which were on goal.
"We knew tonight would be a tough battle with the preseason conference favorite. Samford has had some great results in the non-conference. They beat Baylor and Alabama and we knew it would be a battle for us tonight. Unfortunately, we came out a little slow in the first half and Samford scored a goal. We challenged the players at halftime and we came out with a bit more fire and drive in the second half. We created some opportunities, but it was an uphill battle. Hopefully, we can regroup for our game on Sunday at Chattanooga and get back in the winning ways." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
