Mercer Falls To Chattanooga in Overtime, 2-1
10/2/2016 4:47:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mercer faltered against Chattanooga, as the women's soccer team lost a 2-1 overtime match to the Mocs on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chattanooga took a very early 1-0 lead after scoring just over two minutes into the match. Despite several opportunities in the first half, it took the Bears some time to find the back of the net. Logan Culver knotted the score in the 40th minute after picking the ball off from a Chattanooga defender in the box and taking a quick shot to the right side of the net.
Â
After entering halftime with the 1-1 tie, both teams came out with renewed energy in the second half. With the increased pace of play, both teams took more shots in the second half than they had in the first. However, neither team was able to score again in regulation, sending the match to overtime. Once the overtime period started, Chattanooga again attacked quickly and Hannah Torbett scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute with a header off a free kick, ending the match and giving Chattanooga the result.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Freshman Logan Culver scored her third goal of the season as the first half was winding down and allowed the Bears to tie the match before halftime.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer led Chattanooga in shots, 13-8, including a 9-5 shots on goal ratio.
Â
NOTABLES
"It was a tough loss today for the team and the program. We knew Chattanooga was going to be very organized and defensive minded. Unfortunately for us, we came out slow in the first half and the got a goal early on. I was proud of our players for working hard to come back and tie it up before halftime. In the second half, I thought we had several great opportunities. Unfortunately, we didn't put one in and Chattanooga scored in the first minute and some change in overtime. Credit to Chattanooga. We'll go back to work on Monday, reevaluate everything and see what we can do to get better for a very big game with Furman on Friday night." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
RECORDS UPDATE
The Bears will be on the road again next weekend, starting at Furman on Friday at 7 p.m. in Greenville, South Carolina.
