Clarkâs Late Goal Pushes Bears Past Paladins
10/7/2016 10:11:00âŻPM | Women's Soccer
GREENVILLE, S.C. â Mercer captain Maddie Clark stepped up for the Bears on Friday night as the women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over Furman.
Â
The Paladins controlled the ball for much of the game and the Bears only had a couple of looks at the goal. However, on a Friday night in Greenville, one chance was all it took for Mercer. After 76 scoreless minutes, the redshirt senior connected with a service off a free kick and sent the ball into the back of the net to put Mercer up 1-0.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite a scoreless first half, Furman took eight shots in the opening period as Mercer spent much of the first half on defense and did not record a shot prior to halftime. After the intermission, the Paladins continued to control the ball, but Mercer was able to break away for a few chances.
Â
In the 77th minute, Emma Chandlee took a free kick in the corner and sent the ball into the box. Clark took aim and headed the ball into the goal to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. Both teams played with increased energy in the final minutes of the match, but Mercer's defense kept Furman from equalizing and the Bears held on for the win.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Maddie Clark scored the only goal of the match, securing a win for Mercer. Clark also notched one of Mercer's two shots on the evening.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Furman led Mercer in shots, 19-2, but only led in shots on goal, 4-1.

NOTABLES
"What a game tonight, wow. I felt our team played with passion, fire and drive for the full 90 minutes. That showed tonight in how well we defended and how hard we battled and fought with the top team in the standings. I was extremely happy with the team's effort tonight. We told the team at halftime that all we needed was one chance and we had a great service from Emma Chandlee and a terrific finish by Maddie Clark to give us the win. It was a complete team effort and we're going to enjoy tonight and get to work tomorrow for a tough game with Wofford on Sunday." â Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
