HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams came out playing very strong on the defensive end, as neither club could get much going offensively. UNCG took the first shot of the match in the 8th minute firing the ball high over the crossbar. Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert earned her first save in the 13th minute when the Spartans connected inside the box for the first shot on target.
Midfielder Caroline Smith took the first shot of the match for Mercer in the 27th minute, earning a corner kick off of the deflection. Midfielder Sarah Adcock sent the corner in to Alina McCue who earned the first shot on target for the Bears but was denied by the Spartans' keeper.
Ebert earned her second save of the match in the 30th minute, denying the Spartans of the opening goal once more. Smith took another shot on goal in the 35th minute but was stopped yet again by the UNCG keeper.
The Spartans tallied the opening and eventual game-winning goal in the 37th minute when Kaley Tucker curved one in from 18-yards out. Mercer would enter the halftime break trailing 1-0.
The Bears came out of the halftime break very aggressive, controlling more possession than they did in the first stanza. In the 48th minute, Sarah Adcock rocketed a ball towards goal but the Spartans' keeper was just there to punch the ball out.
In the 63rd minute Smith fired yet another shot but was blocked by the UNCG defense resulting in a corner kick. Midfielder Jasmine Spence sent the ball in to defender Megan Delmonico who took the shot but was just wide of the target.
In the 83rd minute, Ebert grabbed a crucial save to keep the Bears within striking distance. Mercer continued to apply pressure, searching for a late equalizer. The Bears were unable to find the back of the net, falling 1-0 to UNCG.
NOTABLES
• Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert earned three saves on the night and is now 7-6-1 while protecting the net. Ebert played all 90 minutes in the goal.
• In addition to Ebert, defenders Jorden Christensen and Megan Delmonico played the entire match.
• Caroline Smith provided an extra spark off the bench for the Bears, playing 45 minutes, tallying four shots.
• The Bears took five shots in each half.
RECORDS UPDATE
• Mercer: 9-8-1 (3-4-1)
• UNCG: 7-7-3 (4-2-2)
QUOTABLES
"It was a tough one tonight; I felt we played pretty well. We had a chance for a point which would have kept us in the hunt for a top three finish. They (UNCG) didn't break down in the first half, so credit them for that. We came out in the second half with more urgency; we pressed them more. You look at the shots on frame and we had more than they did, but we just weren't quite clinical enough. That's been our motto all season – being better in front of goal – we'll have to get back to work tomorrow and try to fix it before a huge game on Sunday. We still control our destiny for a top four finish and hopefully we can rally the girls and get ready for a big game against VMI." --Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
NEXT MATCH
• The Bears will conclude their regular season, traveling to face VMI in Lexington, Va., this Sunday, Oct. 22, with the match beginning at 1 p.m.
