Bears Fall to Spartans in Double Overtime
10/21/2017 10:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second consecutive match, a late handball provided the opposing team with a game-winning strike. This time it was UNCG who capitalized on a penalty-kick attempt in double overtime to defeat the Bears, 2-1.
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
UNCG poured on a total of 21 shots, including 12 on frame in tonight's match. Mercer tallied 10 shots for the match, eight of which were on target.
Â
MAN OF THE MATCH
Jeremy Booth was tonight's man of the match after collecting a season-high nine saves. Booth bested his previous season high of seven set against Seattle on Sept. 7.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer scored its second-fastest goal of the year as Roberto Arteaga capitalized for his first goal of the season in the ninth minute. Arteaga's goal was set up by Leo Toledo Jr. on the beautiful through ball that split the defenders. Arteaga corralled the ball and fired a shot that was too much to handle for Jon Milligan, giving the Bears the early 1-0 lead.
Â
Mercer held the Spartans scoreless for the remainder of the first half to take the one-goal advantage into the locker room.
Â
UNCG knotted the contest at one apiece in the 64th minute of play as Casey Penland scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Austin Matthews. Penland originally found Matthews in the right side of the box, who then returned the pass right back to Penland for the equalizer.
Â
Neither team could find the game-winning goal in the first 90 minutes, despite the Bears having a few good looks off the feet of Kobe Perez and Toledo Jr.
Â
The Spartans found the back of the net in the 106th minute of play following a penalty kick by Leeroy Maguraushe, lifting UNCG to the 2-1 victory over Mercer.
