Bears Shut Out The Citadel 3-0 in Opening Round of Southern Conference Tournament

MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's soccer squad exploded for three first-half goals in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament, shutting out The Citadel 3-0 at Bear Field Wednesday night.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears recorded 19 shots on the night, three more than The Citadel.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Forward Ally Fordham scored a game-winning goal in the first minute of the match to help lift the Bears to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer scored their earliest goal of the season when Isabel Rothschadl crossed a ball into the box, connecting with Ally Fordham for a quick goal just after 44 seconds of play.
Fordham saw another chance when she headed a ball on frame but was denied by the Bulldogs' keeper in the 15th minute.
The Bears added another goal in the 37th minute of play, when Karina Castillo rebounded one in after The Citadel keeper made a save. Minutes later, Mercer stretched it out to a 3-0 lead when Logan Culver rocketed a ball into the back of the net from 30 yards out in the 44th minute.
The Citadel came out of the halftime break more aggressive than the first, outshooting the Bears 13-6 in the second stanza.
The Bears' tireless defense was able to shut out the Bulldogs, as Mercer prevailed, 3-0.
NOTABLES
• Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert played a full 90 minutes protecting the net, tallying five saves throughout the night.
• Mercer had seven corners on the night, while only conceding four.
• After tonight's result, the Bears now have seven shutouts on the season.
• For the sixth straight season under Coach Economopoulos, the Bears have secured a .500 or better season. In Economopoulos' tenure, Mercer has not had a losing season.
