Mercer Sweeps Savannah State, 3-0

MACON, Ga. – Mercer defeated Savannah State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-16), at Hawkins Arena on Wednesday evening to record a win in its final home nonconference match of the season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-18) |Â Savannah State controlled the start of set one with a 6-3 run. The trailing Bears clawed back with a 12-point spurt to take the lead and maintained it for the rest of the set. The final points came from the Bears' Emily Krogman, who notched a pair of kills.

Set 2 (25-10) |Â Set two's tempo sparked immediately when Paige Alsten added her seventh kill of the match. The two teams were tied at seven, but with a kill from Morgan MacGilvary, the Bears were able to extend their lead. The Tigers were unable to climb out of their early deficit as the second set ended 25-10.
Set 3 (25-16) |Â A kill by Maria Avramova put Mercer ahead by three at 9-6 before Savannah State rallied back to pull within one, 9-8. However, the Tigers would not be able to tighten the nine-point deficit as Sarah Stewart finalized the match with her first kill of the night and second of the season.
NOTABLES
"We showed a little immaturity. We have a very senior-oriented team that I am asking to play a very different style of volleyball; it's like they're learning all over again. We showed some immaturity in the beginning of the match resulting in not controlling the ball very well. We would bat the ball around, and think 'after I hit the ball, it's someone else's problem.'

"To show the resilience of this team, and where we're going on this journey, they really turned the match around especially in the whole third set. That's when we started controlling the ball. We started controlling the pass, controlling the set, controlling the attack."
RECORD UPDATE
The Mercer volleyball team (7-9) continues its conference schedule with two road matches against ETSU and Chattanooga, this weekend. Mercer's first match will be at ETSU on Friday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m., followed by another match at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Chattanooga.Â

- Paige Alsten finished with a match-high 15 kills. Her .714 attack percentage was a season-high mark for all SoCon players, besting her former top mark of .594.
- Morgan MacGilvary notched her fourth straight double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. She has seven double-doubles in 11 matches played this season.
- Mercer's .402 hitting percentage was a season-best.
- Mercer posted eight service aces, its fourth-most this season. Emily Krogman posted three, making it the sixth time this season she has had at least three in a match.
- Mercer finished its home nonconference slate with a 5-7 record. The Bears' 13 remaining regular season matches are all in SoCon action.
