Mercer Drops Road Match at ETSU
10/6/2017 10:10:00 PM | Volleyball
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Mercer came up short in its first road match of the week, falling to ETSU 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-15) on Friday evening.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (21-25) |Â ETSU got a quick jump on the Mercer Bears, scoring the first two opening points of the match Friday night. The Bears retaliated with a 5-0 spurt to take the lead 5-2 in the first set. The Bears stayed in front for the majority of the match until the Bucs tied the game up at 20 and the lead for the remainder of the set. A kill by Emily Krogman brought Mercer within one but the Bears would drop the final three points to end the opening set.
Â
Set 2 (13-25) |After coming up short in set one, the Bears started out set two in the hole. After ETSU earned an 18-6 run, Danielle Faust produced a kill to push Mercer back into the game 18-7. However, the Bears could not tighten the match up within 11 points. A pair of kills by Maria Avramova and Morgan MacGilvary pulled the Bears within 12 points, but the Bucs would finalize the win 25-13.
Â
Set 3 (15-25) |MacGilvary halted the Buc's five-point run with a kill to bring the Mercer within eight points. Three straight kills (MacGilvary 2, Faust 1) brought the Bears' deficit within eight points, 11-17. Despite the three straight points for the Bears, they could not find their offensive rhythm to capitalize against the Bucs.
NOTABLES
"We learned some hard lessons tonight. Going in the road you have to 'bear' down on your scout and stay resolute mentally. Especially against a strong team like ETSU. I think we learned what we are comfortable executing is not going to be enough to win consistently. We are going to need to add some wrinkles."
RECORD UPDATE
Mercer will continue their weekend of travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., where it will face Chattanooga in further SoCon play. The match will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7.
