Mercer Falls to Spartans in Double Overtime

MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer competed in its seventh overtime contest of the season and second in-a-row on Saturday evening against UNCG at Bear Field. The Spartans (5-5-2, 2-1-1) upended the Bears (4-5-3, 2-1-1) in double overtime by the final score of 1-0, scoring with 3:28 remaining on the clock.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Both squads tallied 12 shots in the contest, with Mercer putting five on frame compared to four from the Spartans.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two squads combined for five shots in the opening half with neither team able to find the back of the net.

The competition escalated in the second half as the two squads tallied a total of 15 combined shots in the final 45 minutes of regulation. However, neither competitor buried the game-winning goal, setting up a second-consecutive overtime contest for Mercer.

With 3:28 remaining in the second overtime, UNCG capitalized on a long throw-in as Thordur Johannesson netted the game-winning goal, assisted by Austin Matthews and Josh Masten.
