Bears Drop Heartbreaking 1-0 Overtime Decision to ETSU Sunday
10/8/2017 4:55:00 PM | Women's Soccer
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Mercer Bears' women's soccer squad fell 1-0 to ETSU in their first overtime match of the season Sunday afternoon.
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
Despite the score line, the Bears outshot the Bucs, 13-11, in the match.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Junior defender Jorden Christensen was the woman of the match, playing all 99 minutes for the Bears and getting one shot off.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears were tested early in the match, as ETSU fired one towards goal in the 2nd minute but goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert was there to grab the save. Mercer wouldn't see their first shot until the 26th minute when Emma Chandlee let one rip just inside the box but was denied by the Bucs' keeper.
Â
With intermittent rain falling, neither team could get much going in the first half. The two teams entered the halftime break at a 0-0 deadlock. Mercer outshot ETSU, 3-2, in the first stanza.
Â
The Bears came out very aggressive in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Jasmine Spence rocketed a ball towards the target from outside the box but the Bucs' keeper was there to make the save, punching the ball out.
Â
Mercer continued to bombard the Bucs with a flurry of shots in the second half but could not find the back of the net. In the 69th minute, Ebert came up with another big save to keep it scoreless in the match. Neither team could create anything solid in the final 20 minutes as the Bears entered overtime for the first time of the season.
Â
In the 93rd minute of play, Brie Pavol headed one towards goal for Mercer but the ETSU keeper was there to make the save yet again. A penalty was awarded to the Bucs in the 98th minute in which Sarah Connolly converted the kick for a 1-0 ETSU victory.
Â
NOTABLES
• Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert earned four saves on the afternoon and is now 7-5-0 while protecting the net. Ebert played all 99 minutes in the goal.
• The back line nearly played every second of the match, as Jorden Christensen and Megan Delmonico each played 99 minutes, in addition to Haley McDuffee playing 95.
• Freshman forward Alina McCue provided a solid spark for the Bears coming off the bench, playing 65 minutes and tallying four shots.
Â
RECORDS UPDATE
• Mercer: 9-6-0 (3-2-0)
• ETSU: 5-9-0 (3-3-0)
Â
QUOTABLES
"It was a tough one today. I felt like we dominated the match, especially from about the 25 minute mark on. The girls put forth a lot of effort and energy. To lose on a penalty kick in overtime is always tough. Credit ETSU; we didn't put our chances away. They had about 48 more hours of recovery time than we did, which was an unfair task that we had to deal with, but I was proud of the girls and their effort. We just got unlucky on a call in the box." --Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
Â
NEXT MATCH
• The Bears will return home to play host to the Samford Bulldogs this Friday, Oct. 13, beginning at 7 p.m.
