Former Bear taken in Fourth Round of Triple-A Phase
ORLANDO, Fla. – Former Mercer standout Brandon Barker was selected by the Miami Marlins in the fourth round (Triple-A phase) of the 2017 Major League Baseball Rule 5 Draft on Thursday.
Â
Barker, a right-handed pitcher who graduated from Mercer in 2014, was most recently with the Baltimore Orioles organization. He tossed 117.2 innings and registered a 4.67 ERA with 103 strikeouts at Double-A Bowie before being assigned to Triple-A Norfolk to end the 2017 season.
Â
Originally selected in the 16th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves, Barker spent time with six minor league teams before he was traded to Baltimore in May 2016. He logged 217.3 total innings with Baltimore's Double-A Bowie over the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Â
Barker contributed to a four-year span (2011-14) that saw Mercer win 158 games, including a program-record 43 in 2013. The Bears won the 2013 Atlantic Sun regular season title and earned a NCAA Tournament at-large bid to the Starkville Regional. The right-hander was the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Â
The annual draft took place on the final day of the MLB Winter Meetings, held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando.
