Mercer Falls to UMBC, 15-4

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team was defeated by UMBC, 15-4, on Saturday afternoon.

Statistically, the game was fairly even, but UMBC's fast-paced offense proved to be too much for Mercer's defense. After UMBC took a 7-2 lead at the half, it held on to the momentum in the second half to steadily work its way to a 15-4 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer scored first with a goal from Matt Quinn off an assist from Jake Nelson as the Bears went up 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. After nearly 10 scoreless minutes, UMBC scored twice in the final minutes of the quarter to take a 2-1 lead. The Retrievers outscored the Bears 5-1 in the second quarter as UMBC took a 7-2 lead at the half.

The third quarter was slow for both offenses, as UMBC scored a pair of goals and Mercer added one to move the score to 9-3 at the end of the period. The Retrievers had another productive period in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bears 6-1 and working their way to a final score of 15-4.

Kiel Brennan was 8-for-14 at the faceoff X, recording a 57.1 faceoff winning percentage. He also grabbed a career-high six ground balls.
