Mercer Sweeps with Wins Over JSU, New Orleans

The Bears claim straight sets in each match
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer opened the 2017 beach volleyball season in dominant fashion Friday, sweeping Jacksonville State and New Orleans in straight sets at the Blazer Beach Duals to reach 2-0 overall.
The Bears won all 10 matches in straight sets, giving way to winning their third season opener in the last for years.
Four Mercer pairs – Tori Penrod/Emily Krogman, Emma Peel/Sophie Peel, Danielle Faust/Clarie Waliczek and Madison Kerr/Amber Gibson all won two matches on the day in their respective No. 1 through No. 4 seeds. Demi-Shay Watchorn/Jessica Johnson earned the win at the No. 5 seed against the Gamecocks before Morgan MacGilvary/Gretja Otten took over for the win against the Privateers.
PLAYERS OF THE MATCHES
Preseason All-ASUN selections Tori Penrod and Emily Krogman set the tone for a clinical opening day of the season, sweeping Jacksonville State's Charis Ludtke and Katie Will (21-12, 21-9) before doing the same against New Orleans' Cara Sander and Victoria Corcoran (21-14, 21-13).
