Bears Down Highlanders For Third Straight Win
3/9/2017 3:32:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
MACON, Ga. – It was another banner day for the Bears as four players recorded hat tricks en route to Mercer's 18-12 win over Radford on Thursday afternoon. Lindsey Zeltwanger led with five goals, while Erica Coyne, Kate Leone and Meghan Segreti each scored three goals of their own.
Â
The three-game win streak is the longest in program history as well as the longest home winning streak for the Bears.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer took a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes, but Radford answered fairly quickly and after the first 10 minutes of play, the Bears had a slim 4-2 advantage. Another Mercer goal followed by two from the Highlanders saw Radford creep within one, 5-4, with 11:30 remaining in the first half. Leone scored her second goal of the day with 10:57 left in the half, sparking a 4-0 run for the Bears that gave Mercer a 9-4 lead at intermission.
Â
The Bears started the second half as hot as they ended the first, scoring another four unanswered goals to take a 13-4 lead with 23:27 to play. Radford recovered and scored four goals in less than three minutes to cut Mercer's advantage with 13-8. In the final 16 minutes of play, neither team controlled the momentum of the game. Mercer outscored Radford 5-4 in those final minutes as the Bears held on for an 18-12 victory.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Kelly Hagerty tied her career high of four points off a goal and a career-high three assists. She also grabbed career-highs of seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer led in ground balls, 29-20.
Â
NOTABLES
"One of the things we talked about with this game was it being a team effort; being a team on offense, through our ride in the midfield and on defense. I think that's what pulled us out with the win today. I thought Audrey Allen had one of her best games out there today, but really it was a team effort in each of the parts of our game today."
