Bears Soar Past Owls, 18-9, After Huge Second Half
4/2/2017 4:41:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
KENNESAW, Ga. – Lindsey Zeltwanger scored a program-record nine goals on Sunday afternoon to lead Mercer as it cruised past Kennesaw State, 18-9. Kate Leone added seven points off five goals and two assists as the duo continues to lead the Bears' offensive efforts.
Â
Mercer has started conference play at 3-0, which sets a program record for consecutive ASUN games won. Sunday's win also sets a program record in single-season wins for Mercer as the Bears have eight wins in their third season.
Â
In the second half, Mercer outscored Kennesaw State, 9-2, to blow open the game after a 9-7 lead at halftime. The Bears have had big wins in the last two meetings with the Owls, including last season's 13-5 win in Macon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded goals to open the game and Mercer took its first lead after Leone and Zeltwanger scored back-to-back goals and put the Bears up 4-3 with 17:32 remaining in the first half. Kennesaw State added two more goals to Mercer's one as the score was tied for the fifth time, 5-5, with 11:58 on the clock. Leone found the back of the net for the third time of the half to spark a 4-0 Mercer run that gave the Bears the largest lead of the game thus far, 9-5, with 5:40 until halftime. The Owls added two goals, including one in the final minute of the half, to cut the Bears' lead to 9-7 heading into intermission.
Â
Kennesaw State came away with the first draw control of the second half and looked to keep hold of its momentum from the end of the first half after scoring just seconds later, but the goal was called off due to an illegal stick. Zeltwanger then took the momentum and ran with it, scoring two goals in less than a minute to put the Bears back up four, 11-7. After a goal from the Owls, the Bears rattled off six straight to stretch their lead to nine, 17-8, with 11:49 remaining in the game. Another goal from each team moved the final score to 18-9 as Mercer's 9-2 second half advantage made a lot of the difference in the game.
