Mercer Undefeated In ASUN Play After 24-4 Win Over Howard

MACON, Ga. – The Bears stormed past the Bison on Friday afternoon as the Mercer women's lacrosse team defeated Howard, 24-4, and remained undefeated in ASUN play. Mercer improved to 9-2 on the season and 4-0 in league action, keeping the top spot in the ASUN standings.

Kate Leone and Lindsey Zeltwanger both recorded a team-leading seven points as Leone notched five goals and two assists and Zeltwanger tallied two goals and five assists. A total of 11 Mercer players scored goals as the Bears' offense overwhelmed the Bison defense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer surged to a 6-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game with goals from Erica Coyne, Kelly Hagerty, Leone, Meghan Segreti and Zeltwanger. After Howard broke through the Mercer defense and scored a goal, Mercer rattled off another six goals in less than 10 minutes to initiate the running clock as the Bears stretched their lead to 12-1 with 12:36 left in the first half. Mercer scored another four goals before halftime to take a 16-1 advantage at intermission.

Howard scored the first goal of the second half, but Mercer scored five unanswered goals to stretch its lead to 21-2 with 18:35 left on the clock. The Bears outscored the Bison 3-2 in the final 17 minutes of play as the final score moved to 24-4. The scoring slowed down in the second half, which was played with a running clock for the full 30 minutes.

Kate Leone led Mercer with five goals as she became the program leader in single-season goals. The junior eclipsed her own record of 39 goals and now has 42 on the year. Leone also had two assists, three ground balls and two draw controls against Howard.

- In goal, Haleigh Wurzel made four saves and allowed just one goal in the first half. Michele Holmes played most of the second half, making two saves. Dylan Malamala entered the game and saw some time in goal, but did not face a shot.
