Mercer Cruises Past UNCG, Advances to SoCon Semifinals

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bears picked up a 4-1 win over UNCG on Friday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center to advance to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals.

This marks Mercer's first SoCon Tournament win since joining the league in 2015. It is also the first conference tournament win for the Bears since the 2006 season.

The Bears won the doubles point with wins at flights one and three to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Marie Mottet then started singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 win at flight four to put the Bears up 2-0.

Haley Powell made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 7-5 win at flight five and UNCG grabbed a point with a win at flight six. Katie Sidor clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at flight three. Katia Stavroulaki was up 7-6 (7-4), 4-3 at flight one when the match was called.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Marie Mottet went 2-0 on the day with her 6-4 win at doubles with Christie Cesarini and her 6-4, 6-1 win at flight four.

Next up, Mercer will face No. 2 ETSU on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, South Carolina.
