Three Mercer pitchers combine to allow only one run
CHARLESTON, S.C. – No. 27 (NCBWA) Mercer took advantage of a fielding error in the top of the 13th inning to defeat The Citadel, 2-1, and seal a Southern Conference series sweep at Riley Park Sunday afternoon.
Â
Matt Meeder scored from second base when Bulldogs third baseman Jonathan Sabo booted a groundball by Alex Hanson into the outfield. Meeder had reached with a two-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a single by Ryan Hagan. The sweep was Mercer's fourth straight as it improved to 35-7 (14-1 SoCon).
Â
Kevin Coulter, Robert Broom and Christian Vann combined to limit the Bulldogs (12-25, 3-9) to one run. Coulter received the no-decision despite pitching 7.1 innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. He retired 11 batters in a row after giving up a RBI single in the bottom of the first. Broom allowed only one hit over 1.2 frames and Vann earned his first career win with career-highs in innings pitched (4) and strikeouts (6).
Â
The Bears trailed for six and a half frames before JT Thomas scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Ben Upton in the top of the eighth. Thomas led off the inning with a single and advanced into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by Charlie Madden. Upton made one of the game's key plays later in the bottom of the 12th, throwing out a potential game-winning runner at third base on a sac bunt attempt.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
The nod goes to Coulter and Vann, who ate up 11.1 of the 13 innings on the mound. Coulter was one out short of tying his season-long outing (7.2) while Vann surpassed his former career-long out with four scoreless frames.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's three pitchers totaled 16 strikeouts while issuing only one walk, which was issued intentionally by Coulter.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Tip your hat to The Citadel, they played three great games all weekend but things just ended up going our way. Our staff was outstanding today; Kevin Coulter was great and Christian Vann and Robert Broom were flat out special for us. We keep finding ways to win and today was no exception."
