Bears Clinch Series with 9-6 Win Over Samford
4/8/2017 6:39:00 PM | Baseball
Mercer improves to 7-1 in Southern Conference play
Â
Mercer improved to 27-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play, marking the Bears' best start in SoCon action since joining the league. The win was the Orange and Black's sixth straight overall win and fifth straight in conference play as they clinched their third SoCon series of the year.
Â
The Bears' first four runs of the game came off only one hit – a one-RBI single by Charlie Madden – as they used three walks and two hit-by-pitches to jump out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Mercer drew 11 walks in total, its fourth game this season with double-digits in the category.
Â
Bening's three-run long ball in the fifth gave Mercer a 7-1 advantage, which was enough to hang on for the three-run victory. A solo home run by Madden and a sacrifice fly by Bening in the sixth and eighth innings provided insurance as Samford (19-12, 2-3) plated five of its six runs over the final three frames.
Â
Cox surrendered only three hits and one run over a full six innings and struck out nine, one shy of a career-best. Nick Spear notched his fifth save of the year with the final 1.1 innings of work.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
"Big Hit" Bening's eighth multi-hit performance of the year was highlighted by his 10th home run of the year and career-high four RBIs. He is now 3-for-7 in the series with five RBIs and two long balls.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's patience at the plate created issues for the Samford pitching staff, as the Bears drew 11 walks. Ryan Hagan, Alex Hanson and JT Thomas all walked twice apiece.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Austin Cox followed up Ryan Askew's great start yesterday with a solid one of his own this afternoon. I thought he was a little shaky early on, but he fed off of some strikeouts to give us six good innings. Good pitching and defense are hard to beat and when you add home runs by Hunter Bening and Charlie Madden, we were able to win the series today."
