Bears Open Regular Season With Thrilling 1-0 Victory Over Troy
8/18/2017 10:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TROY, Ala. – Mercer's women's soccer team began their 2017 regular season campaign with an exciting 1-0 decision against Troy Friday night at the Troy Soccer Complex. Junior Caroline Smith knocked in a goal at the 83:41 mark to seal the victory for the Bears. Mercer goalkeepers Leah Cochran and Jordyn Ebert were stellar in the season opener, combining for five saves on the evening.
STAT OF THE MATCH
While Troy outshot the Bears 12-4, Mercer's goalies were a big difference in determining the outcome with five saves on goal.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Caroline Smith scored the game's only goal at the 83:41 mark to lift the Bears to the hard fought victory away from home.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads got off to a slow start in the first half, with neither team getting much going early on the offensive side. Troy produced the first shot of the game in the 10th minute but goalkeeper Leah Cochran came up big with the save.
Â
In the 20th minute Madi Johnson created the Bears' first chance of the season with a shot on target but was deflected. Jasmine Spence ripped one from outside of the box for what was Mercer's best chance of the half but was denied by the post. The two teams entered the half in a scoreless tie.
Â
Freshman Jordyn Ebert saw her first collegiate action when she came off the bench for the Bears to defend the net at the start of the second half. Ebert collected two more huge saves for Mercer as the Trojans began to press for a game-winner.
Â
The momentum quickly shifted the Bears' way when they launched a counter-attack late in the second half. Spence found her way in to the opposing team's territory and connected with Smith who went on to beat two defenders and score the game-winning goal in the 84th minute.
Â
The Bears' defense held tight for the final minutes of the match to give them a 1-0 triumph.
QUOTABLES
"We knew it would be a tough contest with Troy; they are very athletic team. Last year we drew with them so we knew we would be in for a tough battle. We have 10 new girls on the team and we've been preparing very hard the past few weeks to get ready for this match tonight. I felt we came out and executed the game plan and overall we came out with great energy and we finished the game strong at the end. We battled until the very end and scored the game winner within the last six minutes. I am very proud of our effort. We were still attacking at the very end. To come out and get a win in our opener is a great testament to the players and staff and shows that all the hard work we've put in has paid off so far."—Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
