The two Bears hit the road Friday for California
MACON, Ga. – Mercer golfers Mary Augusta Janiga and Payton Schanen will begin play at the 2017 United States Golf Association (USGA) Women's Amateur Championship on Monday, Aug. 7 at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, California.
Janiga and Schanen both qualified for the prestigious event by medaling at separate USGA Women's Amateur Qualifiers in July – Janiga in Boynton Beach, Florida and Schanen in Advance, North Carolina – becoming the first Mercer duo to do so. The pair will be accompanied by Mercer women's golf head coach Michele Drinkard.
Schanen will tee off at 10 a.m. ET Monday and 3 p.m. ET Tuesday while Janiga tees off at 4 p.m. ET Monday and 11 a.m. ET Tuesday.
The field will include 156 amateur women's golfers who will take on 6,423-yard, par-72 course over a seven-day period. The low 64 scorers from stroke play will qualify for match play. If necessary, a playoff will be conducted to trim the draw to exactly 64 competitors.
