Mercer Wins Home Opener, 3-1, Over Alabama A&M
9/1/2017 9:44:00 PM | Volleyball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer defeated Alabama A&M, 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20), at Hawkins Arena on Friday night to clinch a victory in its home opener. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-19) |Â Mercer started out neck-and-neck with the Bulldogs but went on a 4-1 run in the middle of the set to pull ahead 18-11. Both Emily Krogman and Danielle Faust added two serving aces apiece to earn the set.
Â
Set 2 (24-26) | Mercer could not overcome an 8-2 run by the Bulldogs in the second set. Despite three aces a piece from Emilee Wissmach and Claire Waliczek, Alabama A&M used a .367 collective hitting percentage to knot the match, 1-1.
Â
Set 3 (25-19) |Â The Bears reclaimed the set lead as the Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm in the third set. Mercer trailed for the first half of the set until finally tying it up at 14-14, where they pulled ahead. Out-hitting the Bulldogs .370 to .130 resulted in the victory for Mercer in set three.
 Â
Set 4 (25-20) | Six kills apiece by Paige Alsten and Krogman led Mercer to the match-sealing set victory. Back-and-forth play throughout the set kept it a close game until the Bears finally pulled ahead with a service ace by Taylor Spence and two kills added by Krogman.
 Â
NOTABLES
"We're learning about engagement at the end of sets. At the end of set two, everyone was very intrinsic, and everyone was worried about how they were playing individually. At the end of the third and fourth set we were very engaged with one another. There was a lot of contact physically and verbally with one another and it showed in our execution.
Â
"Some coaches say 'it's a process,' and I say, 'what are we learning today?' In a match like that we learned a lot of things. We learned about how hard you can play, because Alabama A&M played us hard, and what playing hard can do for you. We learned a lot about engagement with one another, and we learned about what our volleyball IQ can do at the end of a match."
RECORD UPDATE
Mercer will host Alabama A&M for the second time on Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. in Hawkins Arena.
