Bears Top Presbyterian in Hard-Fought 1-0 Thriller Friday Night
9/15/2017 9:07:00 PM | Women's Soccer
CLINTON, S.C. – Mercer women's soccer team completed their fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 road victory over Presbyterian Friday night.
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears earned six corners in the match while only conceding one to their opponent.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Junior forward Alexius Hill scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute of play, her second goal of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads came out gunning for the early lead in the match. Freshman midfielder Ally Fordham nearly gave the Bears a quick advantage, heading one towards target in the 2nd minute but was denied by Presbyterian's keeper.
Â
The Blue Hose' first real chance of the match came in the 12th minute when Francis Whitesides fired one towards goal but goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert produced a clutch save to keep the match tied at 0-0.
Â
After the early chances for both teams, neither squad could get much going in the first half, failing to connect in the final third. The two teams entered the half deadlocked at 0-0.
Â
Mercer started the second half with a new look. Freshman goalkeeper Payton Jamieson came on to protect the net for the Bears, seeing the first collegiate action of her career.
Â
The Bears nearly struck in the opening minutes of the second stanza as freshman forward Sarah Adcock almost slipped one past the keeper in the 48th minute but was denied at the last moment.
Â
In the 64th minute Mercer came close to taking the lead once again as Brie Pavol headed one towards goal off of a corner kick but sent the ball just wide of the target. Moments later Jamieson earned her first collegiate save, protecting the net in the 67th minute.
Tensions grew higher in the later minutes of the match as both squads pushed forward for a late game-winner. In the 83rd minute, Alexius Hill provided exactly that for the Bears as she smashed one in to the back of the net, assisted by Valeria Bermeo.
Â
Mercer's back line and stingy defense held strong to complete the 1-0 shutout.
Â

• After being outshot in the first half, the Bears came out strong in the second, outshooting the Blue Hose 10-5.

• Presbyterian: 2-5-0
Â
QUOTABLES
"I was happy overall tonight, I thought we possessed the game pretty well. We started kind of slow in the first half but we made some adjustments and picked up the intensity. We're a young team; I think we're a very resilient group. We stuck to the game plan tonight; we kept creating chances in the second half. Overall, I'm happy but know that we'll have to be even more effective in the match on Sunday." --Head Coach Tony Economopolous
Â
NEXT MATCH
• The Bears will return home to host the South Carolina State Bulldogs this Sunday, Sept. 17, beginning at 2 p.m.
