Football team leads the way with SoCon-best 17 student-athletes
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer University placed 42 student-athletes on the 2017 Fall Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Bears' 42 selections ranked second among all SoCon schools, three behind ETSU (45). Five of Mercer's six fall athletic programs placed at least five student-athletes on the academic all-conference team, highlighted by football's SoCon-best 17 selections. Volleyball (7), women's soccer (7), men's soccer (6) and women's cross country (5) all had a least five selections.
Â
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
Â
The league's 10 women's soccer teams led the way with 83 academic all-conference selections, while the nine football schools were second with 81 and the nine volleyball programs were third with 46.
