Bears edge closer to SoCon Regular Season Title with win over UNCG
MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer picked up a critical win over UNCG to remain atop the Southern Conference standings, blanking the Spartans 3-0 at Betts Stadium. With the win, Mercer Head Coach Brad Ruzzo collected his 100th career victory as a head coach, all of which have been at the helm of the Bears.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The two teams combined for 31 shots, including 13 on target, making for a fast-paced match. The Spartans outshot Mercer 16-15, while the Bears held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
MAN OF THE MATCH
JR DeRose played a huge part in Mercer's 3-0 victory, recording six saves to preserve the clean sheet for Mercer. DeRose came up with a clutch fingertip save in the 76th minute, denying Leeroy Maguraushe of the goal in a key moment of the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer came close to breaking through on its first four shots of the match before finally finding the back of the net in the 27th minute. Trevor Martineau connected for his seventh goal of the season off a corner-kick deliverance from Roberto Arteaga. Martineau elevated above his defender to bury the ball with a brilliant header into the far right side of the netting.
The Bears doubled their lead in the 35th minute, once again off a set piece ball played by Arteaga. The junior midfielder delivered a free kick to the far left side of the box. This time it was Ramario Thompson who rose to the occasion. Thompson jumped above his defender and punished the ball with a strong header, outside of the reach of Ricky Zarri for the 2-0 lead.
Both teams had chances throughout the second half to find the back of the net, but strong goalkeeping kept the match at 2-0 in favor of the Bears. Martineau put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute with his second goal of the match and eighth of the season. The 6'4" forward played a two-on-one break with Leo Toledo Jr. for the final goal of the match. Toledo drew the defender in before passing the ball to Martineau for his seventh assist of the season.
