Mercer downs Furman 2-1 in Greenville to claim the hardware
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mercer Men's Soccer squad stormed the field at Stone Soccer Stadium on the campus of Furman after claiming the 2-1 victory in double overtime to clinch at least a share of the Southern Conference Regular Season Championship. Trevor Martineau's goal locked the number one seed in the upcoming SoCon Championship for the Bears, earning a double-bye into the semifinals at Johnson City, Tenn. With the win, Mercer improved to 12-2-2 on the season and is a perfect 5-0 in league play.
STAT OF THE MATCH
There were 17 shots apiece in the match with Mercer outshooting Furman 8-3 in the opening frame. The Paladins responded with 11 shots in the second half to just five from the Bears. Mercer outshot Furman 4-3 in the overtime periods with the fourth shot being the game-winner.
MAN OF THE MATCH
JR DeRose kept the Bears in the match with five saves on the night. DeRose stepped up in a huge way with a critical save in the 68th minute, 80th minute and 96th. DeRose's five saves extended his season number to an even 60 on the campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears rifled five shots in the first 20 minutes of the match, failing to connect on the first five attempts. Jake Mezei gave Mercer another strong look in the 27th minute as his shot banged off the post. It wasn't until the 38th minute that the Bears broke through with a penalty kick goal from Roberto Arteaga. Arteaga stepped up to the challenge and buried the ball opposite side of a diving Ben Hale for the 1-0 lead.
Things took a turn in the beginning of the second half following a double red card situation, taking both squads down to 10 men. The Paladins scored in the 51st minute to even the match at one apiece following Miles Fenton's equalizer.
Both squads had good looks to close regulation but could not find the back of the net, setting up Mercer's third overtime match of the season.
The first overtime period yielded no game-winner as both squads tallied three shots apiece. It wasn't until the 103rd minute, first shot of double overtime, that determined a winner. Leo Toledo Jr. raced down the right sideline getting ahead of his defender. While Toledo stalled for an attacker, Martineau found his way in the box to set up for the game winner. The redshirt-sophomore delivered a cross into the box to an unmarked 6'4" freshman who did what he has done all year, buried a header into the far post, lifting the Bears to the 2-1 victory and the SoCon Regular Season Title.
