Mercer clinches outright SoCon Regular Season Title despite loss
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Men's Soccer team concluded its 2018 regular season on Saturday night at Betts Stadium, falling to the Bucs of ETSU by the final score of 2-1. Prior to the match, the Bears honored their 2018 Senior Class of five players: Emmet Johnson, Jake Mezei, Kobe Perez, Nate Ream and Ramario Thompson. Despite the loss, the Bears clinched the outright Southern Conference Regular Season Championship following Furman's loss to UNCG.
STAT OF THE MATCH
ETSU outshot Mercer 17-12 for the match, including 7-4 with shots on target. The Bears tallied six shots in each half, registering one goal in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bucs scored just three minutes into the match as John Lucchesi connected on a header off ETSU's corner kick for the early 1-0 lead.
Mercer retaliated in the 37th minute with a goal of its own from senior defender Ramario Thompson. Thompson's goal was set up by three consecutive corner kicks for the Bears. As they say, the third time is the charm following Michael Ille's deliverance into the box to a leaping Thompson for the equalizer, his fifth goal of the season.
The match remained knotted at one until the 50th minute when Cameron Woodfin buried the go-ahead header off Luke Parker's pass for the 2-1 advantage.
The Bears nearly evened the match in the 90th minute when Leo Toledo Jr. laced a ball into the middle of the box where Trevor Martineau put a good header on the ball. Martineau's attempt was turned away by Josh Perryman, denying the Bears extra time on Senior Night.
