Mercer Drops 1-0 Decision to No. 3 ETSU Sunday
10/28/2018 5:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Mercer women's soccer squad saw their season end, falling 1-0 in the Quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Championships at ETSU Sunday afternoon. With the result, the Bears finish the season with a 9-7-4 overall record.
Â
Stat of the Match
The match was a defensive battle from the start, with the two squads racking up a combined 27 fouls and Mercer receiving four yellow cards on the day.
Â
Woman of the Match
Payton Schurr was the woman of the match for the Bears, contributing 85 minutes of play. Schurr was very productive in the midfield, coming up with some big tackles at the back.
How It Happened
Both squads flexed their stingy defenses from the get go. Mercer recorded the first shot on frame in the 17th minute as Alina McCue forced the ETSU keeper to grab the save. Jordyn Ebert snagged her first save of the match in the 27th minute, to keep the score at 0-0.
Â
Freshman midfielder Pace Stephenson forced the Bucs' keeper to make another save in the 37th minute. Jasmine Spence would have a couple goes at the goal, firing one on frame but was denied, as the two teams entered the halftime break tied at 0-0.
Â
The two teams battled back and forth searching for an opening goal to open the second period. ETSU eventually found the game-winner in the 80th minute off a set piece from the corner. Mercer continued to push for a late equalizer but was unable to connect on the final touch, as the match ended 1-0.
Notables
"It is tough when your season comes to an end and unfortunately today we played a good ETSU team. We battled with them, toe to toe, and our Achilles heel the past few weeks has been on corner kicks and that is where they found the opener. I felt we had some decent looks throughout the game to capitalize and take control of the game but it just was not our day today. I am very proud of our six seniors who have put blood, sweat and tears into this program over the last four years. I thank them for all their time. But the future is bright here for Mercer women's soccer and we are excited about what the future holds for us." —Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
