Bears Win Eighth Straight Home Contest At Hawkins Arena
MACON, GA – Ross Cummings torched the nets for a career-high 31 points, including a career-best eight three-point baskets, to lead Mercer to a 90-65 victory over Brewton-Parker Tuesday night at Hawkins Arena.
Â
Cummings, a 6-3 junior guard from Dickson, Tenn., connected on nine of 18 field goals and was five of six from the free throw line for his 31-point effort. The scoring outburst broke his previous career high of 23 points which came in last year's victory over Southern Conference champions the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The 31 points was the most by a Bear since Ria'n Holland went for 33 last season against LaSalle.
Â
Two other Bears scored in double figures, including junior guard Djordje Dimitrijevic, who tallied 15, and senior forward Cory Kilby, who scored 10. Dimitrijevic also dished out a career-high nine assists. Kilby and guard Ethan Stair led Mercer in rebounding with eight boards apiece.
Â
Mercer shot an even 50% from the floor and outrebounded Brewton-Parker 41-32.
Â
The Barons placed four players in double figures, led by Jamelle Lanier who finished with 13. Treyvon Deloach led all rebounders with 10 boards.
Â
Mercer started the game slow and found itself in a 16-16 deadlock with 7:24 remaining in the opening half. Brewton-Parker inched ahead 19-16 on a three-point play by Deloach at the 7:18 mark. The Bears then finished the half on a 22-7 run to take a 38-26 lead into the locker room.
Â
Mercer came out after the break hitting on all cylinders to extend its lead to 23 at 51-28 on a three-point basket by Cummings with 15:17 left in the game. Mercer's largest lead was 27 (61-34) with 13:09 on the clock. The Bears kept pace the remainder of the contest to secure the 90-65 victory.
Â
Mercer improves to 4-3 on the season while Brewton-Parker falls to 1-5.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
NOTABLES
Coach Bob Hoffman – "Brewton-Parker did a nice job; they were organized and mixed things up with their defenses. We finally got Ross (Cummings) loose and our guys found him and he hit some shots. It was great that he was able to have the kind of game he had because it was right there the whole game. You have to play these type of games with a different mentality and understand that they are coming to get you and they have nothing to lose. They're hooping like it's a Sunday afternoon and they're trying to keep the court. We need to get Ross going and our guys were looking for him and he responded. Our bench wasn't as good as it's been tonight and it will need to be better against the kind of team we'll see on Saturday (The Citadel). Nine assists by Djordje; he's strong and physical and has a great understanding of the game. The Citadel won again tonight; they're on a roll and they'll be ready Saturday. Our league (Southern Conference) is No. 8 in the country and that's the highest it's been in a long time."
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer opens Southern Conference play by traveling to Charleston, S.C., to face The Citadel Bulldogs Saturday, Dec. 1. Tipoff time at McAlister Fieldhouse is 1 p.m. (ET).
