Bears Earn Thrilling Overtime Victory at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season with a 10-9 overtime victory at Cleveland State Tuesday night.
How It Happened
Mercer (1-2) netted the game's first goal nearly five minutes into the contest (10:29) as Matt Quinn scored his third goal of the season. Will McCarthy added another to stretch the Bears to a two-goal lead. Cleveland State (0-3) scored a man up goal with 6:29 remaining in the first period to get on the scoreboard.

The two teams traded shots with the match tied at 3-3 before Scott Baird scored a man-up goal, assisted by Bryan Gibson with .39 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Bears headed to the break with a 4-3 lead.

The Bears dominated the second period out-scoring the Vikings 4 to 1. Baird added another two goals, and Gibson and Matt Quinn scored a piece each, as all three players entered the halftime break with two goals each.
Mercer maintained their lead with Bradley Hodoval continued to protect the net grabbing three saves in the period. With just over a minute left in the third, Cleveland State chipped into the lead as the Bears entered the final quarter with an 8-5 lead.

Cleveland State rallied back in the fourth quarter scoring two man-up goals, before McCarthy netted his second of the day to give the Bears a 9-7 lead with 6:59 remaining. The Vikings would not go away as they scored two more to send the game to overtime.

Michael Quinn stepped up big for the Bears in the first period of overtime, scoring with just 2:27 left in the period to give Mercer their first victory of the year.
