Bears Drop Decision to No. 55-Ranked South Alabama

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to South Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

The afternoon began with the Bears (1-2) falling behind early as South Alabama (4-0) took the doubles competition. Mercer's No. 2 pairing, Katie Sidor and Anna Sovic, put on a perfect 6-0 clinic over the Jaguars' Yu Fujioka and Alina Zolotareva. Mercer's No. 1 duo, Celine Schepers and Grace Korta, fell to Maxine Palmen and Patricia Martins, 6-4. On court No. 3, the Jaguars' Alexandria Stiteler and Nikola Kohoutova beat Marie Mottet and Christie Cesarini, 6-2.

Singles play began with No. 1 Sidor falling, 6-4 and 6-1, to Stiteler. Mercer picked up a point with No. 2 Schepers' thrilling super tie-break win over Palmen, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. The Bears' No. 3-seeded Mottet added another singles win when she downed Zolotareva in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Court No. 4 saw Korta fall 6-2, 6-0, to Fujioka. The Jaguar's No. 5 Martins bested Maeva Roquebert in a super tie-break, 6-7, 7-6, 10-8. Mercer's No. 6 Sovic was winning 6-5 in the first set when she was forced to retire due to injury.

The Bears will continue their home stand next week, facing Kennesaw State on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
