Bears Drop Hard-Fought 4-3 Contest at Chattanooga

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears' women's tennis team battled hard but came up short in a 4-3 loss to Chattanooga Tuesday afternoon at the Guerry Tennis Center.

The Bears fell behind early, dropping the doubles competition. The No. 1 pairing of Grace Korta and Katie Sidor fell, 6-3, to Samantha Caswell and Emma Van Heen. The Mocs clinched the doubles point with No. 2 Caroline Hall and Bogdana Zaporozhets', 6-4, win over Christie Cesarini and Celine Schepers. The Bears' No. 3 duo of Anna Sovic and Marie Mottet claimed a, 7-6, tiebreak decision over Delaney Edwards and Annie Tarwater.

The Mocs extended their lead as No. 4 Tamri Chalaganidze opened singles action taking a 6-2, 6-0, decision over Korta. Chattanooga's No. 5 Van Hee claimed a 6-4, 6-3, contest over Roquebert. The Mocs clinched the match as No. 6 Zaporozhets defeated Gutierrez, 6-0, 6-4. Mercer wouldn't roll over however, winning the final three singles matches. On court No. 3, Schepers trumped Hall in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 Mottet picked up another point for the Bears, downing Edwards, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0. No. 1 Sidor finished up the day besting Caswell, 7-5, 7-6.

The Bears will conclude their road swing traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. to face the Western Carolina Catamounts on Friday, April 13. Play is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
