Mercer falls on weather-delayed Senior Day
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell to visiting Coastal Carolina, 17-7, on Senior Day at Five Star Stadium after several lightning delays pushed back the start of the nonconference game Sunday.
Â
Mercer honored its 10 graduating seniors – the first four-year class in program history – but fell to 5-9 overall with the loss. It was the Bears' final home game of the regular season; they will host the Southern Conference Tournament at Five Star Stadium in May.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer claimed its only lead of the contest, 4-3, on Caitlin Smith's first of two goals with three minutes and 49 seconds remaining in the first half. Four different Bears providing the scoring efforts for Mercer in the first half, but a goal by the Chanticleers with 1:02 remaining before intermission regained Coastal Carolina its lead.
Â
The Bears found the net just twice in the second half on goals by Erica Coyne and Smith as Coastal Carolina scored 11 times to take the 10-goal victory.
