Stanton Schorr fires tournament-low 67 in final round
PINEHURST, N.C. – Stanton Schorr scorched the third round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships with a tournament-low, five-under-par 67 to finish tied for individual runner-up while Mercer claimed fifth place at Pinehurst No. 9 on Tuesday.
Â
Schorr and Western Carolina's Dylan McQueen tied for second place at even-par (216). The junior jumped 11 spots in the individual standings on the final day of competition to earn a share of the runner-up trophy.
Â
Mercer finished the 54-hole tournament at 41-over-par (905) following its third-round 292, which stood as a field-low team score on Tuesday. The Bears placed behind team champion UNCG (+18), runner-up Chattanooga (+23), ETSU (+27) and Furman (+37).

Final Team Standings
Despite being unable to move ahead of Furman (+37) in the team standings for fourth place, Mercer's 292 proved to be the lowest round among the eight-team field on Tuesday. The Bears were one of four teams to shoot below 300 on the day. It was also a 12-stroke improvement upon Mercer's 304 in Monday's second round.
Â
Mercer's fifth-place finish is its best since joining the SoCon in 2015. The third-round 292 is also the Bears' second-best round in SoCon Championships play; they shot 290 in the final round of the 2017 tournament.
Â
Mercer on the Individual Leaderboard
Any doubts about Stanton Schorr belonging among the SoCon's best were put in the rearview Tuesday as the junior fired off his tournament-low 67. Schorr was the first SoCon men's golfer to shoot 67 or lower in conference tournament action since Wofford's Andrew Novak shot 67 in the third round of the 2017 SoCon Championships.
Â
The Columbus, Ga., native was five-under-par through five holes as he used an eagle on the par-five No. 10 to open his day. Birdies on No. 3, 8, 12, 13 and 14 helped Schorr overcome bogeys on No. 5 and 15.
Â
Three other Bears finished inside the top-25 individually, including freshman Lino Galdin, who shot his best round of the tournament with a one-over-par 73 to finish tied for 11th. Galdin birdied No. 8 and 9 to finish his round in strong fashion.
Â
Coach Kayden's Take
"It was great to play this week to finish out the tournament despite battling some gloomy weather conditions today," said head coach Kirk Kayden. "Although we were unable to move up in the team standings, our field-low score of 292 showed what this team can do when we put together multiple quality scores.
Â
"I am extremely proud of Stanton Schorr for his performance today. He proved he's one of the best in the conference and was able to finish strong. Team-wise, our guys really put it together today. We had three solid rounds in the 70s and Lino [Galdin] was particularly clutch with two birdies to end his round. There's a lot of experience returning for us next year and it is clear to see that our future is bright."
