MACON, Ga. – Mercer squandered a five-goal advantage and was unable to outlast Southern Conference foe Furman in a 15-14 overtime loss Friday at Five Star Stadium.
Â
The Bears fell to 4-7 overall (1-2 SoCon) while Furman (3-8, 1-0 SoCon) earned its first conference victory of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Friday night contest started out strong for Mercer, which used a pair of goals by Lindsey Zeltwanger to claim a two-goal lead. Despite Furman responding with two goals of its own, the Bears found the net six more times and took an 8-5 advantage into halftime.
Â
Goals by Sami Van Slyke and Erica Coyne to open the second half extended Mercer's lead to 10-5, its largest advantage of the evening. However, with 41 seconds left, Meghan Segreti knotted the contest to force overtime with her 16th goal of the season on an assist by Zeltwanger.
