The award was presented at the SoCon’s annual Honors Dinner
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Mercer University athletics department received the Barrett-Bonner Award for a third consecutive year as the Southern Conference hosted its annual Honors Dinner on Tuesday night.
Â
Mercer's three-year run (2015-16 – 2017-18) of winning the Barrett-Bonner Award marks the longest streak since former SoCon member Davidson won the award six straight years from 2008-09 to 2013-14. Mercer and Davidson are the only schools to win the Barrett-Bonner Award multiple times and have combined to receive the award 23 times in its 26-year existence.
Â
The Barrett-Bonner Award is given to the SoCon school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll. The award was first presented in 1994, for the 1992-93 academic year. The award is named after Col. John G. Barrett, faculty athletics representative at VMI from 1965-87, and Dr. Francis W. Bonner, faculty athletics representative at Furman from 1968-90.
Â
The SoCon's Honors Dinner – which serves as part of the culmination to the league's meetings in Hilton Head, S.C. – was highlighted by multiple award winners from Mercer. Seniors Will Bagrou and Kahlia Lawrence received their SoCon Male and Female Athletes of the Year awards while fellow senior Meghan Rud earned the SoCon Presidential Scholar postgraduate scholarship.
Â
The four-day meetings are currently being attended by the institutional presidents and chancellors, athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives, as well as SoCon staff. The league's football and men's and women's basketball coaches are also holding meetings.
