Mercer senior shoots nine-under-par to win prestigious event
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Mercer rising senior Stanton Schorr shot nine-under-par (271) to win the 89th annual Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament by two strokes on Saturday at the Columbus Country Club.
Â
Schorr, a native of Columbus, Ga., defended his home turf with a 68-70-64-69 performance over the four-day tournament. Schorr entered Saturday's final round with a one-stroke lead and came away with the two-stroke victory after recording a birdie on No. 18.
Â
Schorr vaulted himself into the lead with an impressive third round performance, recording seven birdies to just one bogey for a single-round 64 score. He is the first Georgia native to bring home the Southeastern Amateur trophy since Seth Reeves (Duluth, Ga.) in 2013.
Â
Mercer was also well-represented by rising sophomore Nolan Miller, who shot even par (280) to tie for ninth place in the tournament. Miller entered the final round inside the top five before a difficult five-over-par performance on Saturday moved him back to ninth.
Â
The Southeastern Amateur is a top-level amateur golf tournament with a rich history dating back to 1922, when the tournament was created by Fred Haskins. Each year, the Southeastern Amateur has the great honor of hosting many of the nation's top amateur golfers from top programs throughout NCAA Division I.
