Rising Junior Men’s Player Will Square Off Against Nation’s Best
MACON, Ga. – Olivier Stuart, a rising junior on the Mercer men's tennis team, has been selected to play in the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters Sept. 20-23 at the Malibu (Calif.) Racquet Club and Pepperdine University.
Stuart's selection to this prestigious tournament is a first for the Mercer men's program, under the direction of Coach Eric Hayes, who begins his sixth season with the Bears this fall. Stuart, a native of Bussy Saint-Georges, France, compiled a 13-4 singles record in 2018 while playing at the No. 2 position. Teaming up with Sam Philp at the No. 1 doubles position, the duo recorded an 11-7 mark.
The Oracle ITA Masters features the Returning Player of the Year (or other, as determined by the selection criteria) from each Division I athletic conference, with two additional wild card spots. The tournament will consist of a double elimination 32-player men's singles draw, a double elimination women's singles draw, along with a single elimination 32-team mixed doubles draw. Stuart was picked as the Southern Conference representative based upon his results last season and his Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) ranking. The No. 1 seed at last year's Oracle ITA Masters was Petros Chrysochos from Wake Forest, who went on to win the NCAA Singles Championship.
"The Oracle ITA Masters is one of the most elite events outside the NCAA Championship Tournament and Olivier's selection is well-deserved," said Coach Hayes. "We are all judged on our results and performances and when you're successful, you're rewarded with opportunities like this. Olivier will have the chance to go up against some of the best players in the country and this is a nice first for our program."
