GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro toughed out a pair of tight matchups to claim the early singles point, but visiting Mercer raked in a quintet of singles matches, including four via straight sets, to post a dominant 5-2 win over the Spartans on Wednesday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Â
It was the third-straight win for the Bears (7-11, 2-2 SoCon) who also snapped a three-match road skid in the process as well. The setback marred the home finale for UNC Greensboro (6-13, 2-4) who fell to 1-10 all-time in the series with the Orange & Black.
Â
UNC Greensboro got off to a hot start, claiming wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to grab a quick 1-0 lead on the team scoreboard. Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and Nemanja Stefanovic helped the visitors fend off a doubles sweep with a win in the featured doubles matchup, topping John Gabelic and Devon Moskowitz via a 7-4 tiebreaker.
Â
The Bears used two quick wins in singles play to swing the momentum. Howell Burns evened up the team score with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph on Court No. 6, while Shingo Masuda followed a short time later with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to put Mercer ahead. Hector Nissen, however, knotted the team score back up at two apiece with a straight-sets win on Court No. 4.
Â
The storm was all orange and black after that, however. Stefanovic gave the visitors the lead for good on the shoulders of a 6-4, 6-4 win over Gabelic on Court No. 2, and Alex Aldaz provided the match clincher with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over William Elmers at No. 5 singles.
Â
Padio put the exclamation mark on a positive day for MU when he finished off Tymofiy Khrystyuk in the featured singles matchup with a 10-7 triumph in a tie-breaking third set.
Â
The Bears are back in action again on Saturday when they return home to take on Southern Conference rival Wofford (6-9, 1-4) in an 11 a.m. tilt at the Copelan Tennis Complex. Admission is free.
