Niox Wins Twice, Advances To Main Draw At ITA Regional Championships

ATLANTA – The Mercer men's tennis team will boast a pair of competitors when the main draw of the Georgia Tech-hosted ITA Southeast Regional Championship begins on Thursday after senior Nico Niox put together an unblemished run through the qualifying round on Wednesday in Atlanta.

Niox upended Georgia Southern's Albert Widell in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) in his morning contest, and then went the distance in taking down USF's Leo Galliano in his afternoon tilt. Niox toughed out a 7-5 win in his opening set with the 2-time All-Summit league transfer, but was forced to a third set on the heels of a 6-2 setback in the second set. Niox prevailed in the deciding set, 6-2.

The main draw of the prestigious event is scheduled to begin on Thursday morning at Georgia Tech's Byers Tennis Complex. Niox will go toe-to-toe with Georgia Tech's Lucas Yunez in his main draw opener, while Pablo Paternostro will take on Florida State's Justin Lyons in his opening match of the event.

Two other Bears also competed as part of the qualifying rounds on Wednesday. Shingo Masuda and Raphaël Rousson dropped their opening match, but both rebounded with a win in the consolation round.
