SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer University boasted a Southern Conference-best 309 student-athletes who were named to the league's 2017-18 Academic Honor Roll, which was released by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

It has been yet another impressive academic year for Mercer's student-athletes, as they also claimed their third consecutive Barrett-Bonner Award in May and earned their third straight year with the league's most academic all-conference selections on Monday.
Â
Mercer placed 80 more student-athletes on the academic honor roll than the next closest school (ETSU, 229). The Bears additionally led the SoCon with 33 student-athletes who earned 4.0 grade point averages. Of Mercer's 309 honorees were 33 student-athletes – a league-best – who earned a 4.0 grade point average and 86 student-athletes who earned the Commissioner's Medal, awarded to student-athletes who attain a 3.8 GPA or higher throughout the year.
Â
Thirteen Mercer teams were at least tied for the second-most honor roll selections in their respective sports: baseball (32, first); women's lacrosse (31, first); men's golf (11, first); women's golf (eight, tied first); women's tennis (nine, tied first); football (48, second); men's basketball (10, second); softball (19, second); men's soccer (19, second); women's basketball (10, second); men's lacrosse (29, tied second); men's tennis (nine, tied second); volleyball (14, tied second).
Â
The academic honor roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the award as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 GPA or higher, were eligible the entire academic year and were members of the final squad lists.
